Lessons 30-35

Today we will be learning about the combine harvester, solar compass, propeller, and mechanical computer. That looks like fun so lets learn about them.

Combine Harvester (Lesson 31)

Hiram Moore was born in New Hampshire in 1801. Moore developed the combine harvester in 1834. Moore’s harvester was pulled by 18 horses! The grain was bagged at the top of the harvester. Crop prices have steadily fallen since 1806.

Solar Compass (Lesson 32)

William Austin Burt was born in 1792. Burt became surveyor for US government. He invented the solar compass to solve the problem of magnetic in interference in 1835. the solar compass didn’t relay on earth’s magnetic field.

Propeller (Lesson 33)

Francis Pettit Smith was born in England in 1808. He became a farming apprentice. He was by boats as a child. Smith grew interested in how boats were powered. He invented the screw propeller in 1835. It made boats easier to navigate. Another inventor patented a propeller after 6 weeks Smith did.

Mechanical Computer (Lesson 34)

Charles Babbage was born in London in 1791. He became self-taught in math. He designed his “Analytical Engine” in 1835. It did most actions of modern computers. It even had data memory! It would print tables automatically and accurately. Babbage never built the machine.
