Hallo, today we are going to learn about the ironing board,internal combustion, engine, reaping rifle and the twist drill. Sounds like fun!

Ironing Board (Lesson 81)

They used heavy stones to smooth the clothes. Chinese heated their own clothes. The ironing board was invented in 1858.

The ironing board was improved. Electric iron arrived in 1892. Ironing board sales benefited from the electric iron.

The Combustion Engine (Lesson 82)

 Etienne Lenoir, born in Belgium in 1822. He became interested in electricity. He used sparks to invent the internal combust engine in 1859.

It uses small, controlled explosions to drive pistons. It take control valve timing.

Nikolai Otto invented the 4-stoke engine (Otto cyele). Ford Founded in 1901.

We now can travel long distances to work or home. It is used in your lawn equipment.

Reaping Rifle (Lesson 83)

Benjamin Tyler Henry, born in New Hampshire in 1821. He developed Hunt’s lever- action rifle concept. He invented the reaping rifle in 1860.

It is lever- action, rear- loading, cartridge rifle. The lever controlled cartridge flow. It could fire several shots rapidly at close range.

 Some were used in the Civil War, but Springfield rifle dominated. Union solders used they own money to buy the Henry rifle. Henry became famous as “The Gun That Won The West”.

South’s culture changed forever after war ended.

Twist Drill (Lesson 84)

 Rotary tools have long been used to bore holes. Bow drill helps make fire. Steven A. Morse invented the twist drill in 1861.

 Drill bits are cutting tools. It lifts and removes the debris as it turns. Bits are optimized for material they cut. wood bits and metal bits have different tips.

 Morse moved to Massachusetts. He built a two-story factory in 1865. He sold the twist drill all over the world.

 It was used Mt. Rushmore, and the hoover Dam. They make carving and creation easy.
